If you can acquire a version of handbrake compiled with fdk-aac, you'll get comparable quality.Īlso remember that Opus and Vorbis have better open source encoders than AAC (again, if you exclude fdk-aac), though are less commonly used due to required player support. Is the default avcodec AAC audio in the current HandBrake version (on Windows PC) bad enough that HandBrake should be used on a Mac? Apple has the superior codec but not so much as to overcome having only half the bitrate to work with. It should be better, because doubling the bitrate has a large effect. Personally, I would use it at 256kbit for video (for stereo), I think that's acceptable to me.īut, is 256 kbps audio encoded in avcodec AAC better than 128 kbps audio encoded with Apple's CoreAudio AAC? It's the best quality open source encoder (assuming you don't consider fdk-aac as properly open source). I think it's competitive with LAME (mp3) at around the same bitrate, but does not rival fdk-aac. It wasn't true (verified by listening tests), and many such claims have been removed from the ffmpeg docs+website since with not nearly as much fanfare. When the improvements to FFmpeg's AAC encoder landed around 2016 there were a lot of big claims made about it which turned out to be highly exaggerated, with claims that they matched fdk-aac etc. Possibly around half way between the two. It's less than fdk-aac, and more than faac. Is the default avcodec AAC audio in the current HandBrake version (on Windows PC) bad enough that HandBrake should be used on a Mac? (If 20 videos are encoded with 256 kbps avcodec AAC audio on a Windows PC, is the avcodec AAC audio so bad that one should re-encode all those videos on a Mac?) In other words, if audio is encoded in HandBrake in Windows (avcodec AAC) at 256 kbps and up, does that make its quality comparable to Apple's CoreAudio AAC? (Does a high bitrate compensate for it being not as good as Apple CoreAudio AAC?) But, is 256 kbps audio encoded in avcodec AAC better than 128 kbps audio encoded with Apple's CoreAudio AAC? How much of an improvement is the quality of the current avcodec AAC audio (on Windows PC) compared to the previous Libav AAC audio?Īlso, apparently HandBrake's CoreAudio AAC (used on Apple / Mac computers) has better quality than avcodec AAC on Windows. HandBrake's change long for version 1.2.0 (December 2018) says, "Improved quality of the default AAC encoder on non-Mac platforms (FFmpeg AAC)". On HandBrake versions up to version 1.1.2, the Libav decoding library was used on Windows PC (this apparently had terrible quality audio), and starting with version 1.2.0 (released in December 2018), the FFmpeg encoding library started being used (for Windows PC and non-Mac computers).
